EDF3306 Literacy Assessment 2:
Reading Comprehension
Making inferences
Lesson plan examples
Please see the following two full lesson plans about making inferences using multimodal texts which Elise ran with her grade six class on placement last year.
Other activities about making inferences
Here are some quick activities you could use in your classroom to help your students develop their ability to make inferences.
Introduction to inferences video
Here is a video about what inferences are and how we use them in reading. You could watch this with your students, pause it during the examples and ask your students to make inferences about the text displayed on the screen.
'What Am I' poems
-
Read the What Am I? poems.
-
Students could guess what the poems are about by making inferences about the text.
-
Students could discuss the poems in groups and substantiate their guesses with evidence from the text, remembering that inferences are not random guesses, but are based on what is stated in the text.
-
The poems can be accessed here and come from the Teachers Pay Teachers website.
